Patronage and encouragement from the gentry determined both the ideological tenor and emotional aspects of this music. This attitude to 'Verbunkos' made quasi-national heroes of some virtuoso violin-players. As general belief had it, the dance, deemed to be an ancient one, and its musical accompaniment revived not only the era of Rákóczi's insurrection (1703 to 1711) but even the spirit of our conquering forefathers(of the 9th century), as well.
